While Rice was “greeted” with street demos, American targets were bombed in Adana and Izmir on the 5th of February, the day Rice arrived to Turkey. In Adana, a depot of the US transport multinational UPS, close to the Incirlik military base of the US army was bombed. In Izmir, a branch of the US multinational bank Citibank was bombed. Material damage occured in the explosions.

An anti-imperialist revolutionary military group, Armed Forces of the Poor and Oppressed (FESK) claimed responsibility for the bombings. FESK, made an e-mail statement to the press on the 8th of Februrary, declaring that the “bombings are a reply to Rice’s visit”. FESK stated the following expressions in the “statement number 41” :

“Imperialist US bandit who occupied Iraq and Afghanistan and turned the Middle East into a pool of blood, are preparing new plans for massacres and atrocity. USA’s new Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice came to Turkey with this deed and is making negotiations with her collaborator serveants, AKP government and the National Security Council (MGK). We bombed UPS depot in Adana and Citibank branch in Izmir against these new plans, which means the application of the tortures, rapes and thousands of forms of atrocities in Iraq to the peoples of other countries.

Imperialist barbarians and all their serveants cannot escape from the revolutionary violence of the oppressed.”

FESK had also bombed several targets before the visits of Tony Blair and George W. Bush to Turkey this year. They bombed four branches of the HSBC Bank on the 16th of May, the day of Tony Blair’s visit ; and Ankara Hilton Hotel in which George W. Bush was announced to stay, just before his arrival to Ankara before the NATO Summit in June.
