RAB sources said, members of the RAB carried out a special drive acting on a tip-off and arrested Zia Saturday from Mirpur area in the capital and took him to the Rajshahi RAB-5 headquarters for interrogation. Later, RAB carried out another raid early Monday on the basis of Zia’s confessional statement to arrest his accomplices and recover arms and ammunition.
As RAB members reached the Tajia village of Lakshmipur union under Ataikula police station of Pabna, the associates of Zia opened fire on the RAB members to snatch him away. RAB retaliated and locked in a fierce gun-battle when Zia was shot at his attempt to escape.
Critically injured Zia was rushed to the Pabna General Hospital, but the attending doctors declared him dead.
The associates of Zia managed to flee the scene leaving one shutter gun, two round of bullets and a 40-inch sharp knife. RAB said Zia was accused in 19 cases, including seven murders charges.
