A LISTED top terrorist and regional leader of an outlawed Maoist party was killed in a shootout with police at Kasba village in Gangni sub-district in Meherpur district early yesterday.
Amjad Hossain, 45, was regional leader of Purba Banglar Communist Party (Lal Pataka). He was wanted in six cases, including four murders.
Police said they arrested Amjad from Kharampur village in Gangni sub-district on Monday night.
Acting on his statement, police took him to a field in Kasba early yesterday to arrest his accomplices and seize arms.
As soon as police reached the scene along with Amjad, his cohorts opened fire, triggering a gun battle.
Amjad sustained serious injuries and was taken to Meherpur General Hospital where he died at about 4am, said police.
Constables Wahid and Azizul were also injured in the encounter, they added. A shutter gun and five bullets were recovered. Amjad served seven years in jail for snatching a gun from a Gangni sub-district executive officer in 1985.
