Raipur : In a Naxalite raid on a godown of the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) in a village near Bailadila late Thursday night, eight Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel were killed and eight others injured.
Police sources said that nearly 50 armed Naxalites stormed the godown and in a heavy exchange of fire which continued for several hours, killed eight CISF personnel besides injuring eight others.
The Naxalites then took away about 50 tonnes of explosives from the godown, 14 self-loading rifles (SLRs) and more than 350 rounds of cartridges before fleeing from the spot.
The incident occurred near mine No 14 of NMDC where it had reportedly stocked explosives meant for mining operations. NMDC is a public sector undertaking engaged in mining iron ore in the Bailadila region.
Since the Naxalites had disrupted power supply and communication systems before attacking the NMDC godown, security reinforcement could reach the spot only today.
Earlier, on February 6, more than 150 armed Maoists 6 attacked the Arra police post in Chattisgarh, bordering Jharkhand killing two policemen and injuring eight security personnel. The Maoists had then also blasted a communication tower in Jashpur district of Chattisgarh snapping communication links with Jashpur.
Maoists have a strong presence in eight out of 16 districts in Chattisgarh. They are mostly active in Sarguja region and Bastar.
Last week, the Maoists had killed eight refugees in an attack on a Government relief camp in the state’s Bastar region.
